So many POS systems I've seen run custom solutions or small time industry specific programs that very likely would not be known vendors or programs to a company like AVG. Credit cards and personal info, maybe payroll transactions too all processing through and out of the network. POS' do many of the things that it would be looking for. It makes sense an Identity protection module would go after POS systems. It's annoying that AVG pushed this down without a chance to disable it, and it aggressively went after the system. It's a good heads up on not only what did happen with this prorgram, but similarly could in the future especially with small business who would likely gravitate to free or home versions (and who blame$ them. Guess it is just too bad that at least two different POS packages seem to do just that for very good reasons. Store owner asked me point blank "Should we get another solution?"Ĭareful reading of AVG IDP FAQ suggests that it considers programs with hidden windows that monitor the keyboard to be ID threats.

The RS manager in turn deinstalled AVG once he figured out that it was the pushed AVG upgrade that caused the problem. IDP decided that the Radio Shack POS software was a threat and shut it down. So far I've not found a way to disable IP - it restarts after a reboot even if I disable it.Īnother false positive showed up today - second Ace hardware store has a Radio Shack department (rural area).
Has anybody else seen such behavior? Is IP really even worth running? During Windows updates it doubles or triples the time required, during which the machine (only a single core) is useless for anything (task manager takes 30 seconds to appear). As luck would have it, their second cash register wasn't impacted because AVG wasn't active on that PC due to a restore screw-up (by Ace's technical support department) last time the hard drive died.
While it wasn't too hard to recover once I discovered what happened, it does seem odd that AVG pushed a new feature with sufficiently aggressive defaults to shut a business down cold. Unfortunately for my customer, the machine in question is a Ace hardware store's primary cash register and one of the two threats flagged and quarantined was pos.exe - the cash register Point Of Sale application.

After an update to the IP module early this week, AVG took it upon itself to remove two. Recently AVG pushed 8.5 to them (they were on 7.5) with their new "Identity Protection" feature. Got a call today from a customer who has been using AVG for several years.
